Towards evaluating the viscosity of the Earth’s outer core: An experimental high pressure study of liquid Fe-S (8.5 wt.% S)

چکیده
[1] In-situ high pressure viscosity measurements, using synchrotron X-ray radiography, have been carried out on liquid Fe-S (8.5 wt.% S) at pressures up to 6 GPa and at 1823 K. Here we show that (i) the effect of pressure on the isothermal viscosity is substantial, with an apparent activation volume of 5.8 cm/mol; and (ii) viscosity is constant along the pressure dependent melting boundary. Assuming the independence of viscosity along the melting boundary up to core pressures, our results yield a viscosity for the Earth’s outer core, at the inner core boundary, of 1.6 10 2 Pa s. On this basis, we present a revised viscosity profile across the outer core.

First-principles simulations of liquid Fe-S under Earth’s core conditions
First-principles electronic structure calculations, based upon density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation and ultrasoft Vanderbilt pseudopotentials, have been used to simulate a liquid alloy of iron and sulfur at Earth’s core conditions. We have used a sulfur concentration of '12% wt, in line with the maximum recent estimates of the sulfur abundance in the Earth’s o...

[1] Sulfur and silicon are among the expected alloying light elements in planetary liquid iron cores. Structural properties of Fe-27 wt % S and Fe-17 wt % Si liquid alloys at high pressure and high temperature (0–5 GPa/1400–2300 K) are measured by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Sulfur strongly modifies the local structure of liquid iron whereas silicon has only small structural effects. Fe-27 w...
متن کاملExperimental constraints on light elements in the Earth’s outer core
Earth's outer core is liquid and dominantly composed of iron and nickel (~5-10 wt%). Its density, however, is ~8% lower than that of liquid iron, and requires the presence of a significant amount of light element(s). A good way to specify the light element(s) is a direct comparison of density and sound velocity measurements between seismological data and those of possible candidate compositions...
متن کاملSeismological constraints on core composition from Fe-O-S liquid immiscibility.
Earth's core is composed primarily of iron (Fe) with about 10% by weight of lighter elements. The lighter elements are progressively enriched in the liquid outer core as the core cools and the inner core crystallizes. Thermodynamic modeling of Fe-O-S liquids shows that immiscible liquids can exist at outer-core pressures (136 to 330 gigapascals) at temperatures below 5200 kelvin and lead to lay...
متن کاملThermodynamics from first principles: temperature and composition of the Earth's core
We summarize the main ideas used to determine the thermodynamic properties of pure systems and binary alloys from first principles calculations. These are based on the ab initio calculations of free energies. As an application we present the study of iron and iron alloys under Earth’s core conditions. In particular, we report the whole melting curve of iron under these conditions, and we put co...
